Computation & Media
Computation & Media
Computation & Media [B.Tech. 4-years duration] would be offered as an interdisciplinary program between Computer Science & Engineering (Ecole Centrale School of Engineering) and the School of Media. Between the two, the student is exposed to courses in the computer languages used in media technology.
Two Tracks would be offered to students:
- Animation and 3-D modelling, virtual and augmented reality, instructional design, game design
- Web design, social media and intelligence, interfaces and interactivity
Media being the lead school in this case, the media industries will be the career focus. Hence, the overall outcome would be in various forms of storytelling. To achieve this outcome, a student will be trained in the understanding the history, growth, and back-end processes of conventional, digital/interactive, social, and adaptive media. Then, the student operates or designs within technological and functional frameworks.
The final offering will be a result of workshopping this interdisciplinary course with the School of Engineering. This joint offering will heavily rely on investment in a cutting edge laboratory that houses animation, editing, gaming, and related software.
Pedagogic Philosophy
The School of Media’s objectives student-centric. Broadly, the following three testable markers will define the School’s pursuit:
- Conceptual Competency
- Professional Competency
- Ethical Competency
Thus, competency-building becomes the fulcrum of the interface between the student and the institution. These are elements not only for a student in the commitment to their role and exercise of responsible agency, but also for the institution in its commitment to the student. This means that competency should not be defined in narrow curricular or practical success terms, but as the development of a personality that is professionally, critically, and ethically superior—thinking problem-solving researchers and professionals who can rethink paradigms and not become cookie-cutter bench-warmers.
To bolster that goal, the School’s approach will be multi-pronged in the sense that the student must be prepared both in and out of classrooms. Some forms this would take would bridge traditionally disparate paradigms:
- Professional and academically grounded programs.
- Interdisciplinary with high emphasis on research.
- Project- and evidence-based progression in learning, creating and documenting tangible footprints of learning as
the student progresses.
A UNIQUE COMBINATION
The major Computation and Media offers a unique combination of communication, storytelling, and technology courses and research. The program adopts a hands-on approach, attuned to the industry and grounded by research.
